About Yung-Jen
Directing Approach
My works draw on both Asian and Western cinema, using film to bridge diverse cultural experiences and ways of seeing the world. I'm often interested in the quiet tension between personal lives and the social environments surrounding them.
Visual Language
I believe images should grow naturally from the environment rather than be imposed upon it. My visual style develops through observation, responding to the space, the light, and the emotional rhythm of each scene.
Teaching Practice
Because filmmaking can often feel isolating, I try to create a teaching environment where students feel supported throughout the creative process, especially during moments of uncertainty and self-doubt.
Director
My directorial works have screened at festivals including CAAMFest and the Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival. I was also featured by Comcast On Demand as part of its spotlight on emerging Taiwanese filmmakers.
Cinematographer
As a cinematographer, I have collaborated on films including Sunrise/Sunset, Clytaemnestra, and Red Card. My works have screened at BAMcinemaFest and the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art, with all three films streaming on the Criterion Channel.
Educator
Over the past seven years, I have taught filmmaking at Shih Hsin University in Taiwan and through community-based programs with Third World Newsreel in New York, working with students from a wide range of creative and cultural backgrounds.
